Finally! Ford has made another step into engine technology innovation and revealed the next generation of its EcoBlue turbo-diesel engines

Ford says that the success of its Duratorq engines and then EcoBoost petrol engines have motivated the engineers to introduce more innovative engines and they have finally succeeded to develop EcoBlue turbo diesel engines.

What is EcoBlue?

Ford has selected the EcoBlue brand name for the new engines and it will lead the diesel engine family with 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel with cleaner configuration. New engines are around 10 to 15kgs lighter than those 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi it replaces.

Duratorq engines

The 2.2-litre Duratorq engines are leading the Ford Transit vans but in the past these engines were being used in a wide range of models and were also used by other automakers like JLR. These engines were being used in the Jaguar X-type and Land Rover Defender.

EcoBlue engines

As the EcoBlue engines are replacing the Duratorq diesel engines, so it is clear that these engines will come in the same models from where the Duratorq engines will be swiped. Ford Transit range will definitely be the first model line-up to employ the new EcoBlue engines in the Europe.

Ford claims that the new 2.0-litre EcoBlue engines has improved torque delivery where you can enjoy 20 percent extra torque even on 1250rpm that improves the drivability in the city traffic.

What about diesel emissions?

There is a very good news about the emission concerns that the new EcoBlue engines are complying with the strict Euro 6 emission standards.

Chairman of Ford Europe says that the new engines lift the efficiency up and pull the emissions further down by 10 percent to boost the total benefit. It will lower the running costs for the UK customers as well.

The key changes

The key changes to the design of the EcoBlue engine include a 10mm off-set in the crankshaft to reduce the internal friction and minimise the piston load. The new EcoBlue range also boast the turbocharging system, high-pressure fuel injection system, integrated inlet manifolds and new porting for the precise airflow in the cylinders to enhance the combustion.
