BMW introduces its 5 Series with ultra-modern technologies but what about the N47 engines?

BMW 5 series has seen several phases in its life where it started with the most modern M47 engines family which was the most agile and reliable engines family of that time. Then BMW has plans to develop even more reliable and green engines and they have finally introduced the N47 engines in the 5 series.

These engines were first introduced a decade ago in 5 series E61 and E60 models. The face lifted models with M47 engines were discontinued in 2007. The N47 engines were very identical to the capacity of those M47 engines which were available as part of M47 TU and M47TU2 series.

N47 Twin turbo Engine of the Year 2010

Only a month after the introduction of traditional engines BMW released the N47 Twin Turbo engines in October 2007. With 204 bhp it was known a sequential turbo engine series and remained as the first diesel engine on sale in BMW 535d E60 series.

It was the first ever diesel engine on sale by BMW that has achieved a specific power output of over 100 bhp per litre but the technology was not that different from the M47 twin turbo engines.

Apart from the BMW 5 series diesel models, the N47 twin turbo engine has given its appearance in the E8, E82, E87, E88, 1 series, 123d and in the X1 series models, E84 X1 xDrive 23d. The N47 engines earned the fame very swiftly and in a very short time of three years, the N47 engine family managed to win the International Engine of the Year Award 2010.

Challenges for 2017 5 series

This all-new 5 series can compete with them with ultra-modern technologies and alterations which start on the model with new, sleeker LED headlamps built-in with the trademark kidney grille; adaptive LED lights with a 500-metre illumination clear view and new engines too.

The body structure and surfacing is extra tricky than it’s on the present model, with an outstanding shoulder line stretching to the tail-lights, whilst the bonnet shut line has been eliminated. With more than twenty exterior paint finishes at the same time and alloy wheels will be offered from 17 to twenty inches in diameter. Again! Have all these changes will left a space for N47 engines to be the part of the 5 series?

BMW has also changed the chassis of the 5 series and added more length into it. New chassis is 7mm longer than the old one.

BMW 520d EfficientDynamics

Probably the most effective diesel model is the 520d EfficientDynamics, which is powered with the aid of an 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel paired with an automatic transmission having eight gears. It’s claimed to return around 80 miles per gallon and emit just 102g/km of CO2.

The ordinary 520d uses the identical engine but is the only model with a six-speed gearbox, and consequently economies drops to 67.3 miles per gallon and CO2 emissions go up to 108g/km. It seems that the new engine will be a successor of N47 engines family named as the BMW B47 D20 engine.
